Work is beginning in earnest....

On the show's brand new and first ever soon-to-be Patreon only series on the Janissaries. Thus far, for a working title I've got this-

Ottoman Janissaries (Yeŋiçeri): The Religion (Bektaşi) of the Sultan’s Elite (Kapıkulları), Part 1

So far I'm very much in the research phase BUT already I'm fascinated by the seemingly heterodox-religion of the Janissary Ocaks, Bektashism. An offshoot of mainstream Islam, influenced and guided by unapproved saints and mystics, Betashism seemed to be a mix of synchronism and old Turkish Pagan systems.

The Janissaries, almost up till their final end in 1826, were extremely popular amongst the poorest of the poor in Ottoman society all across the Empire. They'd share bread in times of shortages, and took care of orphans and sick. Their strange cult-like group afforded them a close knitted community, and socialist like attitude towards the wider world.

From a book I'm reading (generously donated by a WONDERFUL listener)

"We are believers from old. We have confessed the Unity of Reality. We have a Prophet, Ahmeti Muhtar Canapé. Since the time of the Heroes we have been the intoxicated ones. We are the Moths of the Divine Flame. We are a company of wondering dervishes in this world. We cannot be counted on the finger, we cannot be destroyed by defeat." ("The Janissaries" Osprey. Nicolle.)

I appreciate everyone who listens to the show's support. I really do. Please consider sharing Empires Podcast the Ottomans with a friend. It really helps.
