A While Back..

I put out a "call to arms" and sounded the Orta drums from Edrine (figuratively of course). A few very very GENEROUS listeners heeded the call to arms and came and made some very interesting purchases off of Amazon Book List (Which you can check out under the "support" tab).

Amongst the supporters is "J" really, and I mean really, rose to the call to arms helped move this podcast forward.

Here's how J's donated books will support Ottoman Empire Podcast

God's Shadow: Sultan Selim, his Ottoman Empire, and the Making of the Modern World. By Alan Mikhail

I've been wanted this work for years now. Saw it on a book review blog a year ago (I can't find the link). It'll aide me GREATLY in that weird time between the death of Mehmed II and the next 20 years of the empire's history. Mikhail weaves a tale of great leaders like Selim fighting for glory, survival, and highlights his military and political savvy, while note forgetting "the little" guy like the many personalities so influential in his life.

Turkish Folktales, by Nathan Young edited by Jake Jackson

I haven't talked much about this in the regular show, but I've been running across a ton of stuff related to Turkish mythes, fairytales, and folktales. They are spun throughout the entire history of the Ottoman Empire, from the "dream of Osman" to the legendary accounts of haunted springs, werewolves in the Balkans and much much more. A few Sultans, in the later "Sultanate of the Women" period of history, were often lulled by these tales. I plan on doing several Patreon EXTRA episodes on Turkish folktales and what these stories can tell us about the lives, and contexts these people lived in.

A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East, by David Fromkin

Is probably the singularly BEST written work on the causes and events of the both the First World War and the terrible consequences of unbridled European expansionism and legacy of colonialism. The carve up the Ottoman Empire after the First War is a MAJOR consequence of events we see happening in Palestine today. When the State of Israel wakes up from its genocidal bender and they begin making reparations for the terrible scenes unfolding before the world in Palestine... this book will reverberate as both a guide and a warning. Should be required reading of every single elected official and diplomat in the United States.

Again, thanks so much to all the listeners and supports of Ottoman Empire Podcast. The best way to support the show is by sharing with a friend and/or joining the Patreon.
