As I've said in a previous post about the Patreon Special..
I've been steadily whittling away at the Patreon episode dealing with the Janissaries. This will be a deep dive into the corp and not some surface level "big battle go boom" take like you'd find on YouTube. I'm thus far down in the murk and mud of mystic warlords and elite local landowners attempting to groom the Janissaries away from the Sultan (watch out.. Mehmed II isn't having any of it-spoiler alert).
Also, as on the previous blogpost I've been digging deep into the Janissaries by studying the work: "The Janissaries" by David Nicolle & Illustrated by Christa Hook. In that same vein here is a passage that jumped out at me. I hope you enjoy it and consider picking yourself up a copy of the book here: BUY THE BOOK HERE
"By then must of the Janissary Ocak was spread across the Empire in Korocu (garrison) Ortas which normally did nine-month tours of duty before returning to the capital. But as the Corps grew, the majority of its Ortas became based in the provinces, under the command of local governors. They developed local interests, local loyalties, sometimes taking over local administration, and eventually they became a source of unrest themselves. Meanwhile Yamak volunteer auxiliaries of dubious military value were left to garrison the vital Bosphorus fortresses by the 18th century."

Frank
