I did a special on women of the Ottoman Empire....

Which you can take a listen here: EXTRA 04 Women of the Ottoman Empire- Harem

The plan was to have a spin off series dedicated to the hidden life of women in the Imperial court. The effort only got one episode off the ground and didn't really go anywhere (though listener feedback has asked if their will be more... and it really depends on many factors some outside my control).

In studying up on this hidden history I ran across the work of Dr. Leslie P. Peirce.

("Leslie P. Peirce is an American professor in history. Her research interests include early modern history of the Ottoman Empire, gender, law, and society. She received her B.A. in History from Harvard College, her M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University, and her Ph.D. (1988) in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University. In 1988–1998 she was with the Cornell University. In 1998–2006 she was professor in the Departments of History and Near Eastern Studies the University of California, Berkeley. Since 2006 she is with Department of History and the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies of the New York University, where she is the Silver Professor of History.") The Imperial Harem

by Dr. Peirce is an absolute MUST have for any would be Ottoman history buff. Just the bibliography alone is IMPRESSIVE as hell.

I can SHOW better than I can tell so let me let loose a few extracts from Dr. Peirce's wonderful work. First we've all heard about the execution of Prince Mustafa by Sultan Suleyman, right? Well Dr. Peirce went in DEEP on this one...

"It is difficult to assess the degree to which Mustafa's execution may have been warranted. While the efforts of Rustem Pasha were undoubtedly instrumental in Mustafa's downfall, the prince's fate was not simply the result of a partisan conspiracy. The not-so-distant events surrounding the end of Suleyman's grandfather's reign were a memory that framed the tensions of Suleyman's relations with his own sons. Sixty-four years old and well past the age when earlier sultans had died, Bayezid II had been repeatedly challenged and ultimately "retired" by his son Selim in 1512. The former sultan died on the way to his retirement post in Dimetoka, possibly poisoned by Selim's agents, while Selim proceeded to counter the resistance of his brothers with the most violent enactment of the law of fratricide on record. Eighteen when these events began, Suleyman had been not only an observer but an element in his father Selim's strategy." (Page 81)

Like WOW.

Now you need to get off this darn blog and go pick yourself up a copy of Dr. Peirce's book right now. GO here ➡️Here is Where to Get a Copy

Her entire book is chalked FULL of this kind of amazing detail. In fact, if the Ottoman Empire Podcast spent as much detail as Dr. Peirce does in her book, we'd be at 1000 episodes by the time we made it to Suleyman's reign.

I'm looking forward to getting into some good deep detail in the women of the Ottoman Empire. Will it be a stand alone series as I had originally thought? Probably not at this point... right now I'm sticking with the main narrative. If it IS extra content then you can ALWAYS check out the Patreon.
