So I sent an email..

to Markus Weiner Publishers a few weeks ago. In it I told them about the show and how I planned on using their wonderful title: "Memoirs of a Janissary." To date I've not heard anything from them as far as permission. I make it a point in writing up these blogpost source extracts to reach out personally to the either the publishers or authors of these books. Especially if their work really aided the production of a particular episode. Instead of cramming the show notes with links that won't work in the RSS feeds I like to create these "Source Extracts" so I can point to the blogpost when asked about sources, book recommendations, or where someone can purchase a copy for themselves. I'd like to add as well that I buy each and every book myself, or a generous listener, purchases books for me. Either way I make sure both the publisher and the author get their due.

With that being said "Memoirs" is now being drafted into this daily blogs "Source Extract" series. So here we go!

"CHAPTER 16

HOW IT WENT IN THE SERBIAN OR RASKAN KINGDOM

The Serbian kingdom, after King Uros, became a principality. They chose for themselves as ruler Prince Lazar, who had the niece of King Bros, named Milica. Therefore some were for Prince Lazar and other were against him, as it unfortunately happens everywhere, not only among the laity but also among the clergy. And wherever there is no unity, it cannot be good for anything in this world; as faith without deeds is dead. Emperor Morat, having heard that Prince Lazar was the successor of his ruler in the Serbian kingdom; having assembled an army, Emperor Morat marched to the Serbian land, the Plain of Kosovo. And Prince Lazar, without delaying, also having assembled an army, marched to the Plain of Kosovo and took up a position opposite the Emperor on the other side, at Smagovo beside a stream called the Laba."

Memoirs of a Janissary" by Konstantin Mihailovic.

One thing I've enjoyed so far about Mihailovic's work is his sense of history. I imagine being born in either Kosovo or Serbia he had a firm grasp of the strategic position and how delicate it was of his country. When I've spoken to people from the Balkans I'm amazed at their keen sense of both national identity and history. They speak of these battles we've covered in the Ottoman History Podcast like they happened yesterday. I'm looking forward to diving in deeper into this book for sure.

If you're reading this and enjoyed this extract PLEASE check out Markus Weiner Publishing and buy this book. They also have a ton of other interesting cool stuff as well. ➡️Memoirs of a Janissary Markus Publishing⬅️
